Hey guys, it’s Zainab here, welcome or welcome back to Zainab Chats! Since the Spring break is over, everyone is going back to school and exam season is starting. But it’s also the period where UK Students may be choosing their GCSE courses and some schools even start them midway through the years.
I’m in the 2nd year of my course so I’ll be sharing what I wish I knew before starting them. This post will be split into 3 sections: Choosing Subjects, Revision & Workload/Stress. If you’re not in the UK, you can apply this to any school curriculum you have to choose/have exams for. Let’s jump into it!

Choosing Subjects (What You Should Know)
- Pick subjects that you constantly enjoy learning about
- Ask yourself if you will still like the subject in 2 years time
- Choose a variety of theory/practical based subjects to add variety to your choices
- Check your school website to see what each subject’s curriculum is before you commit to it
Revision (What To Keep in Mind)
- You may have different revision techniques depending on the subject
- Find your preferred revision strategy ASAP
- Trial a range of methods to see what works for you (Mindmaps, Notes, Flashcards, Audio etc!)
- Any revision resources need to be made before hand – it will allow you to spend more time revising
Workload/Stress (What To Remember)
- Procrastination will find it’s way back to you – do revision or assignments quickly
- Someone else will know how you’re feeling, ask for help if needed
- Breaks are vital to your success too
- Remember to take some time every day to distress away from your working environment
I hope this post was useful to anyone going into exam years soon, this is information I definitely wish I had 2 years ago. Thank you so much for reading, let me know how exams/school are going for you in the comments!

As someone who has taken the GCSE’s many years ago though I definitely agree with all of these especially about picking subjects you actually like and enjoy!

That’s very cool that you get to choose your courses. Most high school courses in American public schools are chosen for the students. High school students usually only get to choose an elective, whether they want to study a foreign a language, and specific science or English courses during the last 2 years of school.

Ahhh okay – yeah in the UK at the age of either 12 or 13 you get to pick 5 choices for your GCSEs to take at age 16!

Ahhh this was so useful, I have just chosen my options but am trying to build good habits in terms of revision and completing assignments quickly, so will def take your advice on board!!! Thanks so much 😊

No problem Sylvie! What did you choose?

So at my school we have 3 options plus one mandatory modern foreign language (we take both French and Spanish at the moment) so, after much deliberation I chose Spanish, French Latin and history! I may be mad for doing three languages and no typical creative subjects, however I just thought about the subjects i like best!!!!
What options did you choose and how are your GCSE’s going?

So I got 4 options as I was put on the Triple Science Pathway!
I chose:
Geography
German
Business
Citizenship
Im currently enjoying them! But for subjects like Geography, it depends on the unit! 😂

Ahh yes I am also doing triple science!
I so nearly chose geography but chose to do double languages as although I love human geography I’m not a massive fan of the physical side of it 😆
Your options sound really great!

Omg literally same! We did physical geography for the entirety of the first year and I despised it – but I love doing human geography at the moment! 😆

Aghhh physical geography is the worst!!! The entirety of my first year at school was spent leaning about coasts and maps and I hated it! We also had a rubbish teacher who left our books in a Costa and never got them back 😂

Ha-ha! Nice post, Zainab. Just what I needed… kind of.
I chose my subject combination for my university course early this year for my senior school exams. I kind of wish I had gone into Arts, but since I’ve already chosen, I’m learning the different ways Sciences can be as flexible and lively as Arts as well.
… and it’s funny, ’cause I just wrote a post like this one as well!
This was a great read. ❤

Aww I’m so glad this is helpful! Is it possible to change your choice?? Ooh I’ll check out your post now!

Oh, no. The only way to change choice is to wait till next year to resit for the exams. And I can’t do that! 😂

I’ve been well. Was just a bit sick which affected my blog’s consistency a bit but I’m good. How about you? It’s almost Eid🎉🎉. How are the last few days of Ramadan going?
