Examining A Woman’s Right To Choose

Hello everyone it’s Zainab here, welcome or welcome back to the blog! So, this post is going to be a bit more of a serious tone, as I want to write about the mainstream uproar regarding a woman’s right to choose. This was sparked after incidents in Iran to do with Mahsa Amini, but a woman’s right to choose is not restricted to one country. Globally, women are lacking this right and this has been happening for years. So today, I want to look into this situation (sort of using the recent situation in Iran as a case study) and sharing my thoughts. Let’s jump into it!

What Is Happening in Iran?

Incase you are unaware of what has been happening in Iran, it all began on the 16th of September when a woman named Mahsa Amini died while in custody of Iran’s mortality police. The mortality police are Iran’s Islamic religious police (known as guidance patrol) who detained Mahsa for not complying with government hijab (headcovering) standards. The cause of her death while she was arrested is unclear and controversial – some say she had a medical problem while others say she had been a victim of police brutality.

This sparked global protests against Iran’s laws regarding hijab. Many woman have been burning their hijabs or cutting of their hair in solidarity. This has resulted in further lives being lost as security forces tried to combat their protests.

So far, nothing has changed yet.

How Is This Restricting A Woman’s Right To Choose

As I stated previously, the cause of Mahsa’s death is unknown. But, this becomes irrelevant because she shouldn’t have been in their custody anyway, because she had the right to choose how she dressed. And it was not respected.

Of course, I am fully aware that Iran is a theocracy and Islamic state – and a lot of Muslim women see hijab and modestly dressing as compulsory in Islam and choose to practice this anyway. But, not all Muslim women do, and that’s up to them, and it’s completely against Islam to force the hijab or any other practices on anyone. It’s up to the woman herself to decide whether she wants to wear hijab or not.

So, the Iranian government are not only forcing Muslim women, but also force non muslims and people who aren’t their citizens to wear hijab everywhere. Nowadays, people are a lot more respectful, and most people would dress modestly or wear a scarf if they’re going to a mosque or a religious gathering; out of respect. And people do this out of respect for many different practices worldwide. We’ve seen many women do this in the past when visiting Islamic or religious countries out of their own free will.

But forcing women to wear it is wrong, and forcing them to wear it everywhere is even worse. Because, ultimately, it’s a woman’s choice where she wants to wear hijab or not.

The Other Side Of Choice

This entire post is examining choice. We’ve spoken a lot about the right to choose not to wear hijab, but what about the right to choose the hijab? There has been a substantial amount of media attention regarding Iran and other countries that enforce hijab, and rightly so, I fully support this. However, there are countries that ban the hijab – and the women who want to wear it aren’t given enough attention and support.

This is where I urge you to please ask yourself, am I really supporting a woman’s right to choice and freedom, or is this an agenda against Islam and hijab?

A really powerful video I saw on Instagram breaking down the idea of choice working both ways!

One of the countries contributing to this is France. Back in April 2011, France passed a law to ban face veils (such as burqas and niqabs). At the time, this did not include hijabs – until 10 years later in April 2021 the French Senate voted to ban the hijab for girls under the age of 18 and not allow mothers with hijabs to accompany their children on school trips. This was only a bill (proposed law), and honestly I’m not sure if it’s come into effect yet (maybe someone knows and can tell me!) There was not as much media coverage for this, but on social media the phrase #HandsOffMyHijab started widely circulating

India has also contributed, one of their states, Karnataka banned the hijab for students in their classrooms. This created huge controversy, and very recently was taken to court. So far, the decision has been split with no idea on what the final verdict could be (this could change in the next few days).

One of the key things to note, particularly from these 2 countries, is that this ban is affecting the younger generation the most. How can countries deprive women of their right to choose, when we want to be able to assure the next generation that they have this – but now people in our generation can’t? This does so much more than just affecting one generation, it has a knock on effect!

The Overarching Message Of All Of This

I think the key message to take away from all these situations is that every woman deserves the right to choose what they practice, what they believe and what they wear. The most vital part being that choice works both ways. Please remember this! For me, I am stating very clearly that I am against the force and the ban. It’s frustrating to me that countries are doing this – I hope one day we can live in a world where everyone truly has freedom and choice.

A Discussion on the Importance of Human Rights

Hello everyone, it’s Zainab, welcome or welcome back to my blog! Todays post is on a topic I’ve been meaning to talk about for a while, which is human rights. In this past few weeks, many negative things have been happening to do with human rights – yet they’re so vital for everyone.

So today, I’d like to use this post to discuss their evolution over time, their importance, interferences and more. Let’s get into the post!

What Are Human Rights

Human rights are rights we have simply because we exist as human beings – they are not granted by any state. These universal rights are inherent to us all

United Nations

Above is the UN’s definition of human rights – and they couldn’t have put it any better. They essentially are the basic rights that everyone is entitled to. Regardless of whether your country promotes them or not, everyone has a right to them.

The Evolution of Human Rights

Back in 1948, a document called the UDHR (Universal Declaration of Human Rights) was created by the UN which consisted of 30 protected rights that everyone is entitled to. Despite that this document was voluntary for countries, many countries did use this to adopt some of these rights and legally protect them.
An example is that the UK passed the Human Rights Act (HRA) in 1998 which protected 16 of the rights.

Although that the first original document was created over 70 years ago, even today these rights are vital for everyone and laid the foundation for so many governments and organisations to promote these rights and equality.

Why Are They Important

Human rights are important for the simple reason that they protect us. They allow people to embrace who they are freely no matter their background and they provide fairness to all humans. The UN website states that they have a principle of ‘universality‘ and are ‘inalienable‘ meaning they should be crucial to everyone and shouldn’t be taken away.

The UDHR document really began to pave the way for equality for parts of the world that chose to promote it’s values. This is due to the fact that it’s articles are necessary for every human no matter what. Some examples are:

  • ‘All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights.’
  • ‘No one shall be subjected to torture or to cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment.’
  • ‘Everyone has the right to freedom of opinion and expression’

Read The Entire Declaration Consisting Of All 30 Articles

Interference Examples

An interference of your human rights is when they are breached and possibly compromised. This can be through many reasons such as changes in legislation, torture, etc!

Some recent examples of this was the UK government almost sending asylum seekers to Rwanda, in an attempt to stop people crossing the channel. This interfered with the right to seek asylum and also safety as sending them to Rwanda could’ve majorly increased the risk of human trafficking and exploitation.
The European Court of Human Rights did step in and stop the flight last minute due to the UK still being a member of the Council of Europe.
However, the fact that a country that has legally enforced human rights laws are shocking and could possibly by leading to more future breaches – and with the UK government thinking of introducing British Bill of Rights to replace the HRA (or reforming the HRA) is proving how human rights are being neglected.

Another mainstream example was the recent overturning of Roe vs Wade which led to a ban of abortion in many states in the US. Whatever your stance may be on this situation, it is still very disappointing for women no longer having a right to choose what they can do with their own bodies – especially since the US constitution has human rights that should be legally protected such as freedom. In the case of medical abortions, which could be vital to the mother’s survival, this is incredibly scary and could only be foreshadowing the future of their rights.

These were just 2 examples of breaches of human rights, unfortunately there are many more but I simply don’t have time to go into them, but please write a comment of anything you’d like to share to spread awareness!

Resources and Ideas to Help

Although issues of human rights interferences are on a national scale, there are still actions we can take to try and make help a difference.

Spreading awareness and educating others is a huge one as this is circular, once you educate someone they can educate another person and this will continuously go in a cycle until large conversations are opened.

Sharing petitions, protest details, and updates are also important if you’d like to try and directly make a difference about any human rights issues. (I have listed one that I’ve seen but if you all could share links to petitions and information in the comments, that would be greatly appreciated.)

Here Are My Thoughts On The Current Journalism World

Hey everyone, it’s Zainab here, welcome or welcome back to Zainab Chats! As a lot of you would know by now, I’m an aspiring journalist and I’m very keen to be able to work in the industry one day, so I’m always very interested in it. However, journalism has so many different sectors in it, and the state of current journalism needs to be talked about. So, I want to share my thoughts on it today, and share where I’d like to see journalism go – this is a long post so I’d love to hear your thoughts!

The Current State of Journalism

We are currently in 2022, and everyone has life changing experiences for the past 2 years. With a majority being negative (from Covid-19 to Conflict, to name a few!) It’s natural that the media have been reporting on more negative stories during this time.

But the problem I have with this, that amidst all this negativity, small positive acts are being done and solutions are being found to problems, but there isn’t enough attention given to them. A 2021 research survey by Muck Rack found that,

94% of journalists say that some, most or all of their reporting has pivoted to angles related to COVID-19

Muck Rack

Think of how many negative reports have come from this! And the other 6% may have reported on other issues, but how many mainstream media reports have you seen on positive actions or solutions?

Of course, I’m not stating that journalism and current affairs should be happiness and sunshine, this is just toxic positivity and journalism is about reality! But looking at this statistic, the amount of negative journalism is clearly not balanced with positive news stories, this is going to be damaging to the public! How many positive stories have you seen in proportion to the negative?

You might argue that’s because there aren’t any out there, but there are! Unfortunately, publications focusing on optimism aren’t given enough attention, hence readers are forced to sought out for them, instead of us already having an awareness of them and getting the right reader balance on the state of society.

Journalism & Social Media

Social media has become a huge communications medium – meaning people are able to consume journalism and media reports on the platforms. And for me, I think this is actually really beneficial! I believe it’s rewarding to be able to share small pieces of media on social media, in the form of stories and infographic posts, it’s a lot less overwhelming for someone who wouldn’t want to read an entire news report, especially with the majority being negative.

Media platforms do have disadvantages in the journalism world though. Although sharing more easy-to-read posts and captions will help to increase awareness, readers may not get to learn the full stories this way. Platforms such as Twitter have a word limit, and Instagram has a slide limit, therefore this may cause journalists and organisations to cut down on facts in order to fit the posting capacity – this could lead to a lack of articulacy and possibly creating fake news stories with not all the information considered.

So, I personally do believe that social media is going to be a vehicle for journalism to move forward in the future. People want to consume easy content that can keep them in the loop, it’s crucial though that in creating this content, all the facts are considered, and the whole narrative is shared.

My Future Vision & Constructive Journalism

Reading this whole post has probably given you a brief idea into what sort of journalism I’d like to see. In the future, I’d like to see the rise of Constructive Journalism. This is a new form of journalism that:

Involves the field of communication that is based around reporting solution-focused news, instead of revolving only around negative and conflict-based stories.

Wikipedia

In the future, I really believe that journalism will be so much more valuable to society if journalists are trained to report on solutions to problems, that are innovative and can actually make a change. Journalism impacts so many fields of life, because there are reports on them. The journalism field is always growing, as the world does. And we don’t want to live in a world where people refuse to know what’s going on because it’s too negative.

Of course, journalism is reporting on the world around us, but I believe constructive journalism will be beneficial to helping us find better ways to report on problems, and ways to help out. Hopefully, this can lead to a more positive perception about journalism, people will want to read reports so systemic change can hopefully be made for so many issues!

Thank you so much for reading this post guys, I know it was a really long one, but I’m so passionate about this subject and I really hope I can make a difference. I’m interested in different ideas and conversations, so I’d love for you to comment your thoughts down below!

What’s Happening To Our Food System? (Sharing the Inequities, Ways To Help & More)

Hey everyone, Zainab here, welcome or welcome back to my blog! So, for today’s post, I wanted to share a lot of information I’ve recently learned. You may remember that at the beginning of 2021 I did a post about Child Food Poverty which talked a lot about free school meals.

Since that post went live, I’ve been doing a lot more research and wanted to help – so I actually joined an organisation that has taught me so much about the food system. In today’s post, I’ll be sharing how the food system is rigged against young people, how we can help and more!

What Are The Inequities In Our Food System?

The food system doesn’t necessarily seem like a grand scale problem, but it has massive impacts on us due to the inequality. I’ll be sharing just a few problems.

A major problem right now is junk food advertising. There are floods of these advertisements wherever young people go. And this is a problem. Big companies use this advertising to draw young people to junk food due to the quantity of the advertising. So, how are children and teenagers supposed to make healthy choices when we’re constantly surrounded by junk food marketing?

Pricing is also a big problem. Most people will be able to relate to me when they’re in their school canteen, and a cookie is much more cheaper then a piece of fruit. So, if you’re from a lower income background you’re more inclined to go for the unhealthy choice, or if it’s just out of financial convenience: you’ll go for the unhealthy choice. This is not right, people from all backgrounds should all have the same access to healthy foods!

Not having the right food in our body is going to impact our physical health but also our mental health in environments such as school – where we’re required to be fuelled up in order to be able to learn properly!

How We Can Make A Change

There are many things we can do to help with change – anything, big or small, will be helpful!

A small, local thing you could do is ask for change in your school. If you see issues around pricing, or maybe a lack of healthy options meaning it’s unfair for others. Try and do something about it. Ask others in school how it’s making them feel, if you’re school asks for feedback – give them feedback! Local changes in school is a step to tackling the bigger problem!

Supporting larger organisations is also super helpful. I’d definitely recommend you check out BiteBack2030, they have ran so many successful campaigns and are youth led. Supporting them can really help you to learn more about the food system, check out their website for more information! The Food Foundation also has so much useful information and resources to educate others!

Thank you so much for reading this blog post, if you have any thoughts on the food system, please comment them below. I’d love to talk about it!

Suicide Prevention – Sharing Charities, Support + More!

Hello everyone it’s Zainab here, welcome or welcome back to the blog! I know it’s been a while since I had done a ‘World Issues’ post on my blog – so I wanted to talk about a really important topic: Suicide. But more importantly, preventing it. My blog is all about positivity, and I completely understand that not everyone reading it is always positive (myself included!) so, this post will hopefully help people whether they’re in a really bad headspace or they’re starting to have these dark thoughts!

I don’t want to put just facts and figures about preventing suicide in this post, I want you guys to hopefully feel better or maybe even slightly happier after reading this post, and feel able to talk to someone or an organisation!

Why Should Suicide Be Prevented?

Suicide should be prevented for honestly one of the simplest reasons – your life matters. I understand that someone who may be feeling suicidal will find this extremely hard to believe, but it’s true! I’m not trying to use the cliche ‘everyone has a purpose in life’ but what I’m saying is, you deserve to be here in this world.

You might not realise it, but without realising, you’ve probably touched so many people without realising. Whether it’s your family and close friends or a random person you helped on the street – in your life you’ve touched one person (at least!) So, if not for you, stay for them!

There’s always someone, whether you realise or not, ready to listen to you and be able to help as best as they can!

Charities, Organisations + Helplines

I am not a therapist or expert, so I wanted to share some charities and organisations that have expertise in helping those with suicidal thoughts or people in a dark place. I have shared them below!

Papyrus UK Suicide Prevention – Prevention Of Young Suicide

Mind – Supporting Those Who Feel Suicidal

Samaritan Helpline Number – 116 123

NSPA – National Suicide Prevention Alliance

Pura Vida – Suicide Prevention Bracelet With Money Going Towards Suicide Awareness Voice of Education (SAVE) Using code BRIANNAMARIE20 will also help Brianna Marie pay medical bills for her Cancer Treatment!

A Message From Me

I just wanted to leave a little message from myself for the end of this post. If you’re reading this post, it means you’re a reader of my blog – meaning I care about you! Whether you’re in a good mental state or having bad thoughts, I want you to know I’m there for you! Everyone who reads my blog, I think of as a friend! And I would hate to hear that something ever happens to one of you – so please, seek help, talk to someone, and remember you matter! I’m here for you!

Thank you so much to everyone for reading this blog post! If you or anybody you know is having suicidal thoughts, please seek help and remember your worth!

The Importance Of Representation In The Media

Hello everyone it’s Zainab here, welcome or welcome back to the blog. Today’s post is focusing on quite an important topic: Representation In The Media. I’ll be talking about why it’s important, what more can be done, and some examples of representation that are already out there. Let’s jump into it!

Why Representation Is Important
Representation is something that is extremely important as it helps people have comfort in who they are. In today’s society, everyone knows about mainstream media, whether it’s Working in the media, TV Shows, Books etc! So, when people don’t see someone who they can relate to in something that everyone will pay attention to, they begin to feel out of place and feel like they don’t belong in society. So representation, helps people realise that everyone is equal and it’s okay not to be exactly the same as everyone else!

Also, representation is important as it helps to educate others who already have representation and decrease bullying. As usually, people are bullied for being ‘different.’ Well the reality is, they’re not different, they just don’t have enough (or have a negative amount) of representation. Representation is so important to help people learn about and to respect other’s cultures!

How To Help Increase Representation
There are many things we can do to help increase representation. One of the easiest things to do is to support projects that already have representation. This will encourage media companies to create more as they know people will enjoy them!

Another thing to help increase awareness about the issue is to sign and share petitions. I know you wouldn’t think there any for issues like this. But there’s quite a few calling for representation to be improved, and to make people from more diverse backgrounds be safer and prevent discrimination when they’re working in the media!

Examples Of Representation
Although there’s not a high amount, there is still some great representation that should be more recognised and talked about more. I wish I could say the lost goes on, but unfortunately, there isn’t as much representation for different communities in mainstream media, so by checking out these projects with representation, hopefully it can push companies to integrate more representation into their projects!

  • Never Have I Ever – Netflix (Brown Community Representation)
  • Black Panther – Marvel Cinematic Universe (Black Community Representation)
  • Ms Marvel – Marvel Comics, Upcoming in Marvel Cinematic Universe (Brown Community Representation)
  • Modern Family – Netflix, Disney Plus (LGBTQ+ Community Representation)

Of course these are only the ones I’m aware of, so please share in the comments where you’ve seen examples of representation – I’d love to see more representation for other under-represented communities such as the Disabled Community, Other Ethnic Minorities, Etc!

Thank you so much for reading this blog post, I hope you guys learned something new. Remember to share the representation you’ve seen in the comments!

Raising Awareness For Palestine

Hey everyone it’s Zainab here, welcome or welcome back to Zainab Chats! So, I actually had a different post lined up for today but due to everything happening in the world, I’ve decided to push it back and write this post about Palestine. My blog is all about positivity but I also want to use my platform to raise awareness for different issues. I’ll be sharing what’s been happening, how we can help and some useful links. Let’s jump into the information!

What’s Happening In Palestine?
In Palestine, an occupying country called Israel have been attacking their land. This conflict between Israel and Palestine has been happening for thousands of years but only recently has received more attention due to the escalation of the situation – Israel have been firing and launching attacks in Gaza with several people being killed.

As well as this, they were also attacking the Al-Aqsa Mosque during Ramadan which is supposed to be a holy time for them to pray, but instead they had to hear weapons which is just horrible.

I also just want to make it very clear that I am not Anti Semitic – I love and respect all people of all faiths. I want to make it clear I have the upmost respect for the Jewish Faith. However, I don’t agree with the Israeli Government’s treatment of the Palestinian people. You are not an Anti Semite when you’re standing up against war crimes. I wish to stand up against this oppression!

This conflict is as bad as the World Wars which is horrible to even think about. Bombs, guns and weapon sounds should not be the sounds Palestinian children – or any children – should be waking up to. We all need to come together and help stop this.

How Can We Help?
No matter how big or how small, every little bit counts and Palestine needs our help more then ever. There are many things we can do to help them.

First of all, if you’re in a place in the word that is Corornavirus free or nearly Coronavirus free, protesting is a great way to get your voices heard. I’m sure there are many places in the world holding protests right now, but please be safe!

My next way is something everything can do, use your platforms to educate people. Whether you have a large following on your blog, or a private social media account, everyone has a platform and they can use it to to raise awareness! Even if you only got one person to learn something new, that’s still one new person who has become educated about the situation. Then, that person could share with their friends, and it could be a continuous cycle of education! You could share anything from the links in this blog post to some charity donation links.

There are also many charities out there sending money to Palestine but they need your donations. I will be linking the charities below!

The final way is something so simple yet so effective: signing petitions. There are many petitions out there that can really do good for Palestine. Whether it’s a petition your countries government to help them or a petition to stop trade and supplies going to Israel there’s so many resources available.

Raising Awareness For Orphan Children

Hey everyone it’s Zainab, welcome or welcome back to Zainab Chats! As I’m writing this post, it’s March 14th – which is Mothers Day In The UK. I was saying to my Mum that it must be really disappointing for children who don’t have Mothers, or any parents for that matter. So, she suggested to me to write a post about spreading awareness for Orphan Children so let’s jump into the post.

Who Are Orphan Children?
Orphan Children are children who have lost both their parents due to war, poverty, accidents or other horrible reasons. According to Unicef, there are almost 140 million Orphans in the world which is an upsetting number, with 61 million of them being in Asia.

What Can You Do To Help?
There are quite a few things you can do to help Orphans. Some are simple and some require a lot of commitment.

One thing you can do is sign petitions. There are so many out there for every single country’s orphans to help them receive inheritance, be given more care and more!

The next thing you can do is donate to Orphans. There are many charities such as Unicef, Human Appeal and more where you can donate as little as £1 to help children (I’ll share some links below, please only donate if you can)

Other things you can do are: reading more about them, sponsoring an orphan and more. Some people even adopt orphans if they can!

Black Lives Always Matter

Hey everyone it’s Zainab, welcome or welcome back to Zainab Chats, this post is going to be another ‘World Issues’ post. I’ve noticed that lately the BLM Movement has been decreasing in popularity so I want to try and spread awareness again! Let’s jump into it!

What Is The BLM Movement?
The Black Lives Movement is a campaign to stop racism. It’s been around since 2013 by using #BlackLivesMatter on social media but only in 2020 it became extremely mainstream when a man named George Floyd was wrongfully killed by a policeman. When this happened, Black Lives Matter dramatically grew in popularity and everyone was trying to do their part. Over 26.5 Million accounts have used #BlackLivesMatter on social media!

How Can You Help?
There are many different things you can do to help the movement – so I’ll list some of them below!

The first thing is signing petitions: such a simple, easy and efficient way to get your voice heard – make sure you share petitions too!

Another thing you can do is donate. The Black Lives Matter website has a donation page where you can donate as little as £1. Whatever you can give will really help grow their campaign and fight for justice!

Using #BlackLivesMatter will also help your followers understand the movement -whether you have a large following or a small following – and help spread the message. However, please make sure you share educational resources too ad don’t just post that generic black square!

The final thing you can do is protest. Protests are such an amazing way to get your voice heard – but make sure you attend peaceful ones! Currently, protests may not be the best idea due to COVID 19 but if you’re in a place in the world where you might be COVID free you could find a protest and get your voice heard! If you aren’t COVID free and you’d like to protest, please make sure you take necessary precautions.

Your Opinions:
I asked for you guys in the blog comments and on Instagram to share your opinions on the BLM Movement so I’m going to share them below!

Links:

I hope this blog post has been useful for anybody wanting to learn more about the movement. I think it’s horrible the movement is decreasing in popularity as it was treated like a ‘trend.’ So, I challenge you to make a post about BLM to spread awareness for this issue!

Hey everyone it’s Zainab, welcome or welcome back to Zainab Chats! Today, I’m going to be sharing with you 5 ways to cope with your mental health problems during a lockdown! This post is also a collaboration with Okiki from Purely Kiki, she will be sharing ways to cope any problems too! Let’s jump into it!

Learn A New Skill
Learning a new skill will allow you to distract yourself from the bad feelings and replace them with the satisfaction of doing something new!

Call A Helpline
There are so many great helplines with counsellors who are willing to listen to you, especially during these difficult times where you may need it more then ever! Some great helplines are Childline and Mind UK

Stay Active
Staying active and fit will replace your bad vibes with your adrenaline pumping. You will be able to increase your fitness level and have fun; there are so many great Youtube workouts!

Try And Keep A Routine
Keeping a routine will mantain some normality, I’m not saying to have a perfect routine as it’s still a lockdown but have a rough plan of what you’ll do every day!

Group Video Calls
A group video call will allow you to still keep in contact with multiple friends and actually seeing their face! Talking to friends will really distract you from your sad feelings!

So guys, those are 5 things that can hopefully help you cope with your mental health in lockdown! Be sure to comment down below your advice and check out Okiki’s post!
