Everything You Need To Know About Blog Interviews (Preparation, Research, Reaching Out & More!)

Hey everyone, it’s Zainab, welcome or welcome back! As a lot of you would know, I am an aspiring journalist so I love interviewing people on my blog. I haven’t done it in a while, but I’m definitely planning for some more this year! A lot of people ask me how I do interviews or how I find people, I’ve done posts on specific parts of the question in the past, but I thought it would be more convenient if I compiled all my advice into one post. I am in no means an expert, but I have done quite a few so I have some experience.

I’m splitting this post into three parts: Reaching Out, Preparing and Conducting the interview. So, feel free to read only the parts specific to what you want to find out since there is a lot of information!

Let’s jump into the post!

Reaching Out To Interviewees

When you’re choosing who you’d like to be your interviewee for an interview it’s very important that you see how popular they are. Sometimes, you might reach out to someone with thousands of followers, so they may not see your request. This happens a lot, so I just say start small with maybe a few fellow bloggers or content creators who you’ve already interacted with, this way you already have experience for when you reach out to larger people!

Once you’ve decided who you will reach out to, the question is: How do I reach out to them? You can do this in two ways:

  • Email
  • Social Media (E.g Instagram or Twitter)

If you’re reaching out to someone you’ve already interacted with, then stick with social media as you’ve already spoken to them and it’s more direct!
If you’ve never spoken to this person, you may find that emailing is better as it’s more professional. But, I have found that a lot people do check their DMs, so if you choose to send an email, send a similar message (but shorter) to their social media as well and let them know more details were emailed to them.
Reaching out via social media means you have to be very persistent, even if it’s commenting on one of their posts to let them know you’ve sent them a DM. Whether you do this or not could be a huge factor in whether you get the interview or not, because trust me people do read their comments – a large amount of my interviews have come from people noticing me commenting on their social media!

Preparing For The Interview

Once you have a confirmed interviewee it’s now time to move onto the next stage: Preparation! Preparation is so key, because you can really tell in an interview how much preparation has been done, and it really leaves an impression on the person because what you ask them is based on preparation.

When you prepare your questions the most important thing is to do lots of research. You want to make sure you ask a variety of questions to the person, not just on one subject. Of course, you want to go into the interview with a main angle or topic in mind, but put yourself in the shoes of the person, getting asked questions on the same topic can be draining after a while.

An example is, if you interview an actor who has a new movie coming out. Naturally, most interviews will be them getting asked continuous questions about their movie – and a lot of the questions will become repetitive after a while. But, if you do research and find other ventures they’ve done (E.g they started a business or charity work) you can ask them that to add more varied questions and to make it more interesting for those reading the interview and the interviewee!

The Main Sources Of Research For An Interview Are:

  • Their Social Media (Instagram, Twitter, LinkedIn etc!)
  • Their Wikipedia or trusted online sources
  • Any Previous Interviews They’ve Done
  • Any Content They Produce (Youtube Videos, Blog Posys etc!)

I would say that social media is probably what you’ll want to look at the most. Because people post so much about their interests and other ventures as well as the mainstream work they do. Therefore, you can ask a lot of questions based on their social media!

Conducting The Interview

When the time comes for the interview to be conducted, it’s very exciting because you’ve been working up to it! You have two options when it comes to conducting the interview:

  • A Written Interview
  • A Spoken Interview

If you choose to do a written interview, this means you send the questions over to your interview, they send their answers back to you! This is a very convenient method if the person or you are busy, or if it’s one of your first interviews and you’re nervous, it’s a great way to ease yourself intoA spok it. Also, your interviewee will be able to add details of any extra information they’d like to say. The only downsides are you’re not directly speaking to them so it might not be as personal, and you won’t be able to ask follow-up questions. But, I’d still recommend this method for when you begin to interview people, or if you don’t have time for a spoken interview!

A spoken interview is always super fun, it allows you to have a true conversation with the person, ask follow up questions and really get to hear the passion in their answers. A few things to consider when doing the interview is:

  • What Platform You’ll Do It On (E.g Zoom, Google Meet etc!)
  • Any Time Zone Difference (Figure out the time difference and ask the person when they’re free and see if you’re available in your time zone – remember they’re giving up their time for you!)
  • An Estimated Interview Time (Spoken interviews can vary in time, and if people are busy, give them an estimated interview time so they can be prepared!)

Whatever interview you decide to do, the biggest thing to stress is listen. Whoever you’re interviewing has a story or advice to share, and you’re giving them your platform to share it. So, make sure you listen intently and be respectful!

So, that’s all the advice and tips I can give for when someone asks me about blog interviews. I hope this was useful to anyone who wants to start doing them. Speaking of interviews, I should have a new interview released within the next 1-2 weeks so I’m excited for that! Let me know in the comments your thoughts on blog interviews!

Blogger’s Confessions With Meghan from Meghan’s Teen Life

Hey guys it’s Zainab! Today I’m going to be interviewing teen blogger: Meghan from the blog Meghan’s Teen Life! Let’s get into it!

  1. Thank you so much for being interviewed Meghan! Can you start off my sharing with my readers a bit about you and a little bit of your blogging journey?
Yes, of course!! Hi everyone! I’m Meghan from Meghan’s Teen Life. I run a blog and instagram account that launched in the middle of February this year! My platforms focus on giving advice to teenagers like me. I often share my own experiences which has boosted my confidence since launching my blog!
  2. Your blog has over 200 followers – what advice would you give to new bloggers to grow to that following?
Instagram really helped with my engagement early on. Before I launched my site, I connected with a few teen bloggers on instagram who turned what would have been a zero into 5 or 10 for my first few weeks of blogging!! Don’t get me wrong, I did not grow at all at first; it took me three months to reach 25 followers on my blog! Know that your content will improve over time, which will help you gain followers, so be patient!!
  3. You’ve mentioned quite a few times on your blog that you don’t really enjoy school, what made you want to start your blog then as writing is obviously a huge part of blogging!
It’s actually hilarious that you bring that up, Zainab!! I really do complain about school a lot, which begs to question: Why do I blog? My hatred for school stemmed out of the social aspect. I am not a sociable person, so being crammed in a building with 800 kids really stressed me out. I was always miserable in school because of that, not to mention the fact that homework is the worst! Despite that, I love to write. I’ve always been into writing, so it made perfect sense for me to have a blog!
  4. Also, you’ve written a whole blog post about how nobody you know actually knows about your blog; what prompted you to make the decision on keeping your blog private?
I wanted to write about my relationships, and to do that comfortably, I figured that it was best that no one knew about my blog. I wanted to write about my relationships, and to do that comfortably, I figured that it was best that no one knew about my blog. I’m also a very private person in general, who hates any attention on myself. Not that anyone in my school would care, but I would feel rather self conscious and my writing wouldn’t be terribly open and honest.

Thanks so much for coming on the blog Meghan! Be sure to check out her blog and Instagram!

Blogger’s Confessions With Beth Lucy

Hey everyone it’s Zainab! I feel like it’s been forever since I’ve done a Blogger’s Confessions post! Today, I’m interviewing the lovely Beth from Beth Lucy Blogs! Her blog’s main niche is travel but she also talks about fashion and she also has an Instagram with over 12K Followers which we will talk about later in the post, let’s jump into it!

First of all thanks so much for agreeing to be interviewed Beth! For anybody who doesn’t know about you why don’t you explain a little bit about yourself and your content!
Hi! I’m Beth, a sixteen year old from the outskirts of London who loves fashion and travelling! Most of my followers follow me for my travel content, but due to Corona, I’ve been posting much more fashion content recently!

Let’s start by talking about your blog, what gave you the idea to start Beth Lucy Blogs?
I started my Instagram account in Autumn of 2017, but I only started using it in January 2018! I started my account with a friend at the time, who made one too. I decided to create the account as a way to share my blog! My English teacher at school had told me that she thought I should seriously consider starting a blog, because she thought my writing was good and as writing is a passion of mine, I decided to set one up!

Your blog mainly focuses on travel, so why do you have such a huge passion for travelling and how do you get to travel to so many of these amazing places?
I find exploring new places and discovering different countries cultures really exciting and interesting! I’m very lucky that my parents are able to take me on holidays often and it is only because of them I get to visit these amazing places.

You have over 300 followers on your blog so can you share some tips on getting more traffic towards your blog?
I had 162 followers on my WordPress blog when I last checked and I can’t imagine it has gone up that quickly!! I mainly get traffic to my blog by sharing it on my Instagram.

Now, we will talk a bit about your Instagram, first of all, when did you start creating content on your Instagram?
I started my Instagram account in Autumn of 2017, but I only started using it in January 2018! I started my account with a friend at the time, who made one too. I decided to create the account as a way to share my blog!

If anybody needs some Instagram content ideas what ideas would you give them?
I’d tell them to definitely get inspiration from Pinterest and also reuse photos they already posted or recreate photos which performed well on Instagram! The key is to definitely just be creative and original with content, don’t follow trends – instead be a trend-setter!

Let’s talk about growth on there, what advice would you give to anybody who wants to get to 10K on Instagram?
I’d firstly recommend them to not focus on the numbers!! It’s not healthy and I used to get obsessed with how many followers I had and likes I received. It’s not important and as long as you are creating content you love that’s all that matters! ❤️key tips to reach 10k include: share high-quality pictures, use hashtags, be consistent and active, use presets to create a beautiful feed that people will want to follow and be yourself ❤️
Hope that answers all your questions!! Have a great Sunday!

If you guys want to see more of Beth then you should definitely check out her Blog and her Instagram!

Blogger’s Confessions With Vivian And Sairah From Iridescent Blog

Hey guys it’s Zainab, welcome back to the blog! Today, I’ll be interviewing Vivian and Sairah from Iridescent blog! Since it’s a joint blog, I will be asking a couple of questions for both of them to have a joint answer and then ask them separate questions related to them. We talk about all things blogging, niches and their friendship, let’s get started!

Thank you guys for agreeing to be interviewed. Here’s are questions that you can both have a joint answer for: What inspired you guys to create a joint blog as there aren’t really many joint blogs out there, why didn’t you create different blogs?

Sairah and I are very similar in personalities so I knew we would work very well together. We created the blog together and not separately because we wanted to find something we can do together to split the workload because this is a hobby and it isn’t something that were dead set on to rely on this as our source of income if that makes sense. The blog was something we can do together and still keeps us close because I’m moving to a different school starting this September so we can’t see each other every day anymore.

How has blogging together made your friendship stronger?

I wouldn’t say blogging has made our friendship stronger but it has definitely made us talk a lot more than we already do. Blogging is something we both love so I guess having common interests do strengthen friendships.

Whose idea was it to start the Iridescent Blog and how did you guys know it was better for you to blog together?

It was initially Vivian’s ideas to start the blog , and I was so happy when she asked me to join her , doing a blog together let’s us provide much more content and we can share the amount of work put into it so it’s less stressful. And this will be a plus side when we start school again.

Question For Vivian:

What is your main niche that you focus on when you write content for the Iridescent Blog and why do you focus on that?

The main niche I focus on is music, advice, travel, school and fashion & photography because those are my strong points and I have a lot of knowledge on it which I hope to share with everyone.

Question For Sairah:

What niche do you mainly focus on when writing the blog and why do you focus on that?

I write about a range of things but I like to focus on , advice , issues within society (which I sometimes like to portray in the form of story telling ,from someone’s narrative perspective. )But I also do the fitness section of our blog . I feel like these are the topics I can talk about most , and therefore I can engage with the part of our audience that likes to read about this stuff 🙂

Thanks so much to Vivian and Sairah for agreeing to be interviewed, go check out their joint blog Iridescent for a range of different niches and posts.
