Ms Marvel Series Review

Hello everyone it’s Zainab, welcome or welcome back! Today I’m posting another review – I did post a movie review last week however I knew I had to share my thoughts on the MCU’s latest show, Ms Marvel. This show means a lot to me on so many levels, so I’m really excited to share my thoughts today. Let’s jump into this!

Official Reviews

Ms Marvel received some incredible reviews from critics. It’s one of the best reviewed shows on Disney + which makes sense considering it received 98% from Rotten Tomatoes’ Tomatometer as well as 8/10 from IGN with The Guardian calling it a ‘Glorious Debut!’

My Opinion

Ms Marvel is a series portraying Kamala Khan’s journey as she gets superpowers, all whole she’s just trying to be a normal teenager in high school. And I personally loved this! It’s not that often that the MCU creates coming-of-age projects, but it’s clear that they executed this one really well. Many people loved that they were able to relate to Kamala in so many ways in the growing up aspect, and as a teenager myself, it was very cool to see a superhero who had some of the same simple problems that I do.

Community is also a major part of this show. This is one of the only times in the Marvel Cinematic Universe that a superhero has a stereotypical nuclear family dynamic (as in her family supports her being a superhero instead of trying to kill her like many other MCU family members!) And the dynamic between her social circle and herself is so wholesome. The show did a great job on casting the perfect people, Iman Vellani and the rest of the cast had amazing on-screen chemistry! Since this show was targeting more younger viewers, it was a great way to showcase that family and friendships are vital to everyone, even for superheroes.

One of my favourite scenes is in the finale episode, in which after she saved her community, her community (even strangers) save her from Damage Control taking her. And this scene really speaks volume. It shows how much goodness can have an impact and even ‘normal’ people without superpowers can make a difference in the world!

Another cool part of this show is the comic-book accuracy. Despite the controversy over changing her powers from elongation (her original comicbook powers) to manifesting light which came from a bangle, Marvel fans still loved how much the rest of the show stayed true to the comics! Everything from famous scenes to the show’s art and aesthetics were very much true to the comics. This may have been them trying to compensate for altering her comic book powers, but regardless I thought it was done amazingly!

From Episode 3 onwards, the show begins to touch on some historical aspects of Pakistani culture regarding the partition between Pakistan and India. And I thought the show handled this very well as it’s a very harsh topic for many families as people became divided and unfortunately people died. And I was really happy the show made true historical context as a major part of this show and it is referred to a lot when discussing the origins of Kamala’s bangle.

I had to save my favourite part for last, which is the representation! Because I think it was done beautifully in this show. Pakistani culture was very well represented in this show (I can say this being Pakistani myself!) I particularly resonated with her interactions with her family, and the South Asian market scenes. It was very clear that the show had people behind the scenes who understood the culture – which really increases my respect for Marvel for hiring diverse creatives and cast. In a society with representation at the heart of it, seeing Muslims and Pakistanis being represented as protagonists and them being shown as just normal people doing fun family things such as dancing at weddings is huge! Even though some people did review-bomb this show as seeing a Muslim Pakistani as a superhero was not what they were into, I hope this paves the way for the beginning of positive representation for all minorities.

Representation of fan culture is also such a fun part of this show. Kamala is so relatable as a fan – she loves the Avengers, she posts theories and reviews while attending fan events, she cosplays! It’s exactly what many fans of the MCU do and to see that portrayed on the big screen is very exciting. I think it shows, despite that the MCU is fictional, the idea of being a superhero and making a positive difference to the world is so appealing – and I think this is the creators way of nodding to fans showing that anyone can be a superhero!

Therefore, I thoroughly enjoyed Ms Marvel! I’m really upset to see it go, I’ll miss the hints at culture, easter eggs and the humour from the incredible cast. But I’m hoping there’s a season 2! Any non Marvel fans reading, this is a great entry point into the MCU – I would recommend this to anyone!

Synopsis

Kamala is a superhero fan with an imagination, particularly when it comes to Captain Marvel; Kamala feels like she doesn’t fit in at school and sometimes even at home, that is until she gets superpowers like the heroes she’s looked up to.

A Critique of Friends – The One With The Problems

Hello everyone it’s Zainab, welcome or welcome back to my blog! First of all, Eid Mubarak to anybody celebrating Eid today or if you celebrated yesterday!

Today’s review is slightly different as it’s going to be more of a critique of the hit sitcom Friends I’m sure most of you have heard of this show, it was massive success albeit it’s problems. I have watched the show and I’ll admit it’s quite entertaining but that doesn’t mean it’s flawless. Today, I want to break down some of the show’s problems showing why it was inconsiderate to have some parts in the show, analysing a recent news report and why the show should be used as a learning curve in Hollywood.

Before I get into this, I just want to make it clear that this is my opinion, you are free to disagree. These are just my thoughts and I do not hate the show – I actually really like it, these are just some points I picked up through watching it many times as I’ve gotten older and maturer while reading up about it. Let’s jump into it!

Casting

One major reason why the show was subjected to major criticism was because of the lack of diversity in casting. The show featured an all-white main cast along with only a small amount of diversity in the supporting cast. It was not very often that many BAME actors with significant roles appeared on the show – I can only think of a few!

The worst part about it was this all-white cast’s home city in the show was New York! New York is probably one of the most diverse cities in America – so have an all-white cast living in New York not only creates a lack of media representation for minorities but is also not articulate to the true makeup of New York’s different demographics!

I’ve spoken numerous times about the damaging effects resulting from a lack of media representation – but it also could have been so relatable and heartwarming to have a more diverse cast featuring immigrant multicultural stories, that could have made the show just as successful instead of using the rude and weird humour that the show is famous for.

Contributions To Systemic Issues

Speaking of the humour, many of the shows jokes and punchlines seemed funny, but now almost 20 years later in a more tolerant society – some of the humour is simply not funny anymore and actually incredibly rude. From homophobia to fatshaming, the show definitely received criticism for contributing to many systemic issues, but if this show was airing in this day and age, I doubt it would’be been renewed for 10 seasons.

Many issues it contributed to:

  • Homophobia
  • Fatshaming
  • Toxic masculinity
  • Racial stereotypes
  • Gender stereotypes
  • Degrading women

Yet, It Was A Learning Curve

Despite the way the show went about it, it’s important to remember that Friends did put forward many topics that were controversial at the time and did do it’s best to challenge them. They could’ve done a much better job at going about this (and way more respectfully) but considering it was a 90s show and now in 2022 we have a new set of standards, perhaps the poor depiction of different issues opened up new conversations at the time about how these issues are presented onscreen such as gender roles, homosexuality, body positivity and many more.

Yet one thing I did love about the show was the value of friendship between the main 6 characters, I believe this was pivotal to the show’s success and definitely paved the way for friendship sitcoms – as that was beautifully handled.

Many people involved in the show did say if they went back in time they wish they didn’t do certain things or joke about certain issues, so at least the show’s popularity did encourage some retrospect as well allows our generation to understand how different jokes are harmful to some people.

So, I do believe that after this show different systemic issues could be thought about being implemented into shows more – with positive solutions being weaved into the plots. This show’s success was pivotal, it’s popularity caused by some criticism allowed future shows and sitcoms not to make the same mistakes the show did, and I am grateful for this.

A Recent News Report on the Co-Creator

Just over a week ago, a report emerged that the co-creator of Friends: Marta Kauffman planned to donate $4 million as a way for her to course correct the shows whiteness. Marta realised how systemic racism had been internalised and how she brought it in in ways she never realised, according to the Guardian. As a way to correct her mistakes, she plans to fund a professorship which aims to support ‘scholarships on the peoples and cultures of Africa and the African diaspora.’

Read The Full Article On Marta Kauffman here.

Like I said, it’s really good to finally see some accountability being taken, despite it being almost 20 years ago. I hope Hollywood creatives use Friends as a lesson to learn from, they should acknowledge different societal issues, but it should be done gently and respectfully with solutions being presented along with a representative cast.

Dr Strange In The Multiverse Of Madness Movie Review

Hey everyone, it’s Zainab, welcome or welcome back! Last week, I went to watch Marvel’s latest movie, Dr Strange in The Multiverse of Madness. The movie definitely was interesting so I’ll be reviewing it today, don’t worry, there will be no spoilers from the movie, I’ll be talking about the movie in general but nothing that wasn’t revealed in the trailers!

Official Reviews

Dr Strange 2 received a 7.5/10 review from IMDb along with 75% from Rotten Tomatoes’ Tomatometer. Audiences gave an average of 3.7/5 Stars on the Google Audience Rating Summary, and overall 86% of Google Users liked the film.

My Opinion

Dr Strange in The Multiverse of Madness is Marvel’s latest project leading straight off of their last movie: Spiderman No Way Home as well as the series Wandavision. As all Marvel movies do, this movie was no different to immaculately connecting the different projects all together and it did a great job at interlinking many character’s storylines.

Continuing on from the opening of the multiverse in SpiderMan No Way Home, this movie is a wild adventure through the endless possibilities of new universes exploring different realities, variants, consequences and more. The concept of the different universes can be very confusing and there’s still lots to be discovered and developed with a lot left unknown even by the end of this movie, but it was a great starting point to explore different realities in the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe!

Since the multiverse had already been confirmed from the beginning, surprises were expected left, right and centre in this movie. However, Marvel already revealed a lot in trailers and promotional footage for this movie, so I’d definitely say expect a dramatic adventure involving Dr Strange, Wanda and new character America Chavez as a core plot point in the movie. Unfortunately we did not get every cameo you could think of, but it was still an enjoyable movie, I just think a lot of surprises were ruined from trailers and I probably would’ve enjoyed it more if less was revealed in the promotion for the movie.

This movie was directed by Sam Raimi who is known for his horror projects so it’s obvious that this movie would be a lot more graphic compared to the 1st – and that was correct! There was a substantial amount of blood and gory images in this movie, so this definitely isn’t for young children, the target audience is definitely older than children watching SpiderMan No Way Home – so just keep that in mind if you’re watching this with kids.
Physical violence and horror was expected but this movie actually tapped into emotional horror which was definitely unexpected. Dr Strange, America Chavez and Wanda especially all faced horrifyingly emotional situations in one way or another in this movie. Although they were dramatised and made more fantastical for the sake of a Marvel movie, I’m sure there are parts that viewers could relate to, I’ve read reviews and opinions of this movie where people could understand the characters which was really moving to read and to watch the movie.

This movie opened up a new chapter for the Marvel Universe which was really enjoyable to watch. I thought the acting, cinematography and writing was really well thought out. I definitely agree with the reviews, I think I would’ve given it more praise if the movie had more surprises and the trailers didn’t raise expectations too high. Regardless, I’d definitely recommend this movie to anyone whose looking for a mix of Horror and some Sci Fi/Fantasy!

Synopsis

Dr Stephen Strange casts a forbidden spell that opens a portal to the multiverse. However, a threat emerges that may be too big for his team to handle.

I hope you enjoyed hearing my thoughts on Doctor Strange 2, I’d love to hear how other people found the movie, so if you’ve watched it please let me know your thoughts in the comments!

The Source Book Review | AD

Hey everyone it’s Zainab, welcome or welcome back to Zainab Chats! Today, I’m going to be reviewing a new book called, ‘The Source’ by Ifunanya C Ogo. It’s a very interesting novel, so when Ifunanya reached out to me and asked me if she could send me the book and share a review, I was so excited, but don’t worry all the opinions in this review are genuine! so we are just going to jump right into the review! Some spoilers ahead.

My Opinion:
The Source is a fantasy fiction book with very interesting characters and story lines. It tells the stories of Madison and Jason waking up on an Island with no memories of who they are. Madison and Jason are trying to figure out who they are and what they’re doing on the island. One of the most interesting things about the plot is everytime the two of them would go to sleep, they would dream one of their memories! For the rest of the story, they are trying to piece together their memories to try and figure out their purpose on the island!

My favourite thing about the book was the whole concept itself. The fact that Madison and Jason both find out they’re transcenders (people with powers) is so cool and the way there’s a lot of backstory to the plot such as different types of particles and types of sources really draws you into the plot more!

I also loved the idea of ‘The Master’ being someone who has discovered the most about their transcender powers. The sense of him being a bit of an anonymous old man nobody really knew much about added some mystery to the story which I really enjoyed!

There was a lot of multiple narrative in the story (the story being told in different perspectives) which was really unique but sometimes I did find it a little bit confusing. If you do like stories being told in different perspectives I’m sure you would enjoy the book more! Also, in terms of the pace, it was quite fast which I actually really enjoyed as I felt I could indulge into the story more!

Synopsis:
A girl, unwanted in the world, wakes up on an island, pleasantly deserted. Memories gone, nothing holding her back, she is free. A boy, who prides knowledge over anything else, realises just how much he doesn’t know, especially about himself. Alone in a strange land with no memories, his intellect is all he has. Then they find each other again. Memories return slowly, and with them, a myriad of questions. And then their powers. With them, the children realise what they must do.She must find the Source. And he must confront the darker unknown side of himself, one that will destroy them both if not dealt with…

Chinese Cinderella Book Review

Hey guys it’s Zainab! Before I start this post I would just like to say thank you so much for 20 followers, I really appreciate it! Let’s see what the next milestone will be!

I have recently finished a book called Chinese Cinderella and I found it such an inspiring story, so today I’ll give you a quick book review!

Official Reviews
Chinese Cinderella received so many amazing reviews such as 4.1/5 stars on Goodreads and 5/5 stars from Waterstones! The novel also has 87% of Google Users liking the book! Goodreads also described it is a ‘riveting memoir’ which is so true!

My Opinion
Chinese Cinderella was probably one of the most emotional books I have ever read. It tells the true story of neglected Chinese girl Adeline Yen Mah and how she overcame all her sadness. Her story is the most unfortunate and tragic thing I have ever heard as her whole family thinks she was bad luck and she was hated by her siblings. I would definitely recommend it to someone who is going through a rough time and letting them know they aren’t alone.
Also, considering I usually tend to read fiction books over non-fiction books or autobiographies but the way Adeline portrays her story makes it so interesting and you want to know more about what happens. Another great thing about the book is it teaches you about the Chinese Culture!

Synopsis (From Goodreads)
A Chinese proverb says, “Falling leaves return to their roots.” In Chinese Cinderella, Adeline Yen Mah returns to her roots to tell the story of her painful childhood and her ultimate triumph and courage in the face of despair. Adeline’s affluent, powerful family considers her bad luck after her mother dies giving birth to her. Life does not get any easier when her father remarries. She and her siblings are subjected to the disdain of her stepmother, while her stepbrother and stepsister are spoiled. Although Adeline wins prizes at school, they are not enough to compensate for what she really yearns for — the love and understanding of her family.

Thanks for reading guys, I hope you enjoyed this review and I truly think you should all give this book a read!

I don’t really talk about world issues online but I thoroughly urge you all to sign the petition to help get justice for George Floyd

Spies In Disguise Review

Hey everyone, it’s Zainab! Hope you’re all doing well! So today I’m going to do a quick movie review on a movie called ‘Spies In Disguise’ starring Will Smith and Tom Holland! I know it came out in December but funnily enough I only just watched it! So today, I’m going to review it and share my thoughts.

Official Reviews

Spies In Disguise recieved so much amazing feedback! It was given 75% from Rotten Tomatoes as well as 4/5 from Common Sense Media! 90% of Google Users liked the film and it was said that ‘Smith and Holland have great buddy-comedy chemistry and give this weird-in-a-good-way animated adventure a charming, crowd-pleasing vibe. ‘ Which is so true! Check out more reviews here!

My Opinion

I thought Spies In Disguise was such a comedic movie teaching you to always accept other people’s help and knowing you always need to work together, which is a great lesson for younger children! I also loved that the movie had so many funny aspects to it (which I won’t spoil!) and it was just a great laugh! Will Smith and Tom Holland had amazing chemistry resulting in their characters Lance and Walter working so well together in the end!

Synopsis

Lance Sterling and Walter Beckett do not work together at all! However, when there is a strange turn of events they have to learn to rely on each other and work together. Or else they can’t save the world…
