3 Steps To Improve The Efficiency Of Your Studying

Hello everyone it’s Zainab here, welcome or welcome back to my blog! I feel like I’ll be writing so many school-related posts this year as I approach my public exams this summer. But today, I wanted to share some of my advice of efficient studying. Let’s jump into it!

FOCUS ON YOUR WEAKEST TOPICS

Focusing on your weakest topics, or topics that you haven’t gone through much, are so important when it comes to the efficiency of your learning. I mean, there’s no point going over a topic if you got 100% on that section in previous quizzes. It will just be wasting precious revision time, and you won’t be learning anything new.

Instead, pinpoint topics that you’ve struggled in and focus on them. That way, your cumulative knowledge of the subject will go up, because you have your new subject knowledge as well as the retained knowledge. Of course, still look over what you do know – but not in as much depth.

SET A LIMIT EVERY DAY

This may sound slightly unconventional initially, but remember that more studying doesn’t necessarily mean that you will do better.

I’ve experienced firsthand the consequences of trying to study too much in one day, and honestly it’s worse than not studying at all. You can just get so burnt out and forget everything!

Instead, you can set yourself a temporal or topic limit. For example, I’m going to revise a maximum of two hours a day, or I’ll revise these 2 subjects today. That way, you know you can achieve something – but also not overworking yourself.

BUILD UP RESOURCES AS YOU GO

Sometimes you are so close to an exam or test, that it’s just not a pragmatic approach to make notes or new flashcards the night before. So, one really time-saving technique you can try, which is so simple, is just saving your resources from time’s of previous revisison.

Each small quiz or assessment you take is building you up to your end of year or public exam, so if you save them and use them to learn – you’re going to save time, and also you’ll be able to improve from how you previously performed!

Thank you so much for reading this post, I hope it was useful. Let me know in the comments what advice you would give to others!

Evaluating The Idea Of Being Constructive

Hello everyone, it’s Zainab here, welcome or welcome back to my blog! I feel like this whole month has been going quite fast, how are we already over halfway through January?! Today’s post is going to be on a really interesting topic – it’s one that links to positivity but the concept is kind of differing. I recently read a blog post by Writer Ravenclaw in which she spoke about Praise over Criticism – and it got me thinking about the idea of constructive criticism; which then led me further to the whole idea of being generally constructive. So today, I want to look into what it means to be constructive, how it compares to positivity, and more. Let’s jump into it!

  1. WHAT DOES BEING CONSTRUCTIVE ACTUALLY MEAN?
  2. HOW DOES BEING CONSTRUCTIVE COMPARE WITH BEING POSITIVE?
  3. CAN WE UTILISE CONSTRUCTIVENESS TO BENEFIT OUR SOCIETY?

WHAT DOES BEING CONSTRUCTIVE ACTUALLY MEAN?

If things are described as constructive, they are useful and intended to help or improve something.

Cambridge Dictionary

As you can see from one of the official definition, being constructive is used as a means to get better at something – perhaps even eventually excel at something. It’s the idea of getting feedback or improvements, and using them to change.

The word itself, constructive, and it’s connotations are used in many contexts. One of the most widely used ones being constructive criticism: critiques that work to uplift someone rather than put someone down. There’s also constructive journalism (which I’ve spoken about a few times on my blog before) which focuses on solutions rather than solely the negativity around a situation.

Even when you think about construction in everyday life. The whole concept is around building things, which is exactly what being constructive is too. Making yourself better, just like construction does to builders.

HOW DOES BEING CONSTRUCTIVE COMPARE WITH BEING POSITIVE?

So, looking from an external point of view, you may think that being constructive can be pretty much used synonymously with being positive. And, to be honest, they are used interchangeably. Although, when you deeply look into the two, you will come to realise that they can be quite different.

As we know, positivity is about optimism: looking on the bright side and focusing on the good. While this is vital to mental health and our ambitions, there is a limit. I spoke about this in depth in my post Realism vs Optimism – A Comparative Discussion, too much positivity can hurt you sometimes – because that means there’s no actions to take for change, and it can lead to toxic positivity.

While being constructive is literally built on what positivity needs to improve on. It’s about acknowledging the good, like positivity, but focusing on what went wrong and making it better.

In my opinion, I think that focusing on construction is a strand of positivity – the best of both worlds. You’re take pride in your achievements, while simultaneously learning from your failures. This also helps to break down the stigma of failure as well, something a lot of readers of this blog said that they could relate to me on.

CAN WE UTILISE CONSTRUCTIVENESS TO BENEFIT OUR SOCIETY?

We live in a society that is very negative at the moment, through toxicity on social media, high beauty standards, rising adversity; and unfortunately more. But maybe, adding a more constructive approach to our external environments could be the key to making a change.

Think about it, instead of telling someone:

‘You’re perfect at XYZ’ or ‘You shouldn’t bother trying XYZ’

you tell them…

‘If you practice consistently, then you will get better at XYZ’

Can you see the difference? The constructiveness really allows a person to build a skill by giving specific improvements and targets, rather than just saying someone is good or bad.

There’s so many directions this can be taken in, bosses can use this to train their new employees, teachers can use this to help their students (the next generation of new employees.) And people who are on the receiving end of constructive words could pass it on to others, and in an ideal world it could become a cycle of construction. Helping everyone to improve in any aspect of life!

This post was so interesting for me to write and compile, I really hope you guys took something away from it, and enjoyed it! Let me know in the comments what you think about being constructive.

A Guide To A Productive Summer Break

Hello everyone, it’s Zainab, welcome or welcome back to my blog! It’s the beginning of the summer holidays now – and I could not be more excited. One thing I’m looking forward to is getting time to relax, however I think it is important to give yourself a small amount of time in the Summer to do something productive (and this can be done in a variety of out-of-the-box ways) So today, I’ll be sharing my guide to being productive this summer break!

Firstly, What Does It Mean To Be Productive?

Resulting in or providing a large amount or supply of something

Cambridge Dictionary

Above is the simplest definition of the word ‘productive.’ In this context, it’s doing a lot of something that can stimulate your brain or give it some type of new information (which usually provides pleasant results). For example, studying would be considered productive as it’s reinforcing new information!

Productivity means something different to everyone. To one person, it might be writing a fun blog post, or to another person it might be a 3 hour study session. Whatever it means to you, you can find ways to implement it, in the simplest ways, even in your summer break.

1 – Interleave Revision Sessions

Since this is summer break, I still want to include studying as a small part of my productivity. During your summer break, it is not necessary to work everyday for 6 hours a day (because the whole point of the break is to have time off of school). But, it wouldn’t be a bad idea to just interleave a few revision sessions over the course of the weeks during the break just to go over your notes before the new school year!

6 Week Break Example

  • Week 1 & 2 – Relax/Enjoy your summer break to the fullest
  • Week 3 – Exactly the same just include a few revision sessions over the course of that week
  • Week 4 & 5 – Relax/Enjoy your summer break to the fullest
  • Week 6 – Exactly the same just include a few revision sessions over the course of that week to prepare for back to school.

Even during the weeks where you include a few sessions, you don’t have to do that much! Maybe go over your notes from the previous year, or check up on anything you were unsure about. I’d say maximum do an hour a day as you’re only consolidating your notes – and pick one day to do a specific subject! Also, feel free to alter this if you make plans or are going on holiday (remember it’s your break so you don’t have to stick to this like an exam timetable!)

2 – Visit A New Place

It might sound surprising, but even by visiting a new area or attraction, it can still be counted as productive. Because you can provide your brain with new information, whether it’s being exposed to a new culture in a landmark, learning a new skill at an event or vising a museum with interesting facts!

A new place could really help you to expand your skillset and try new things – which is still productive. (Remember productivity is not just academic success!)

Some places I’d like to go are: Museums, Farms, Observatories etc! Many of these may also be free so check your local areas to see if there’s any new places you can visit this summer.

3 – Start A Passion Project

Everytime someone asks me to recommend them to do something new, I always think of a passion project – because they are amazing in so many ways!

Passion projects could include: A Youtube Channel, A Blog, A Podcast, Creating a Small Business etc.

These projects are the best because you can make them all about whatever you’re interested in, and they are known to benefit so many people in the future because of the new skills they gain and the experiences they go through.

Plus, your passion project will be completely different to someone else’s project so it helps it’s uniqueness. And it won’t feel like work if you’ve decided create one about something you truly love, and most people who start these always say it’s one of their best decisions!

I hope this post was useful to anyone who wants to have a fun summer while still being productive – remember productivity can be achieved in so many ways. Thanks for reading, please comment your summer plans and what you’re going to do!

Advice for More Efficient Work Outs

Hi guys, it’s Zainab here, welcome or welcome back to Zainab Chats! Today’s post is going to be a fitness related post, which I honestly don’t post a lot. But, we are at the end of February meaning the 2nd month of 2022 is gone. And since one of my resolutions was to work out more, here is some of my advice to make working out more efficient!

Use Extracurriculars as Ways of Working Out

I’m sure many of you do other clubs and activities that require being active. Well, you can class them as workouts without actually having to go to the gym or do a home workout. This way, you can be having fun and keeping fit! For example, you can use PE lessons at school to count as a workout or a sport you do. Just make it creative!

Interleave Workouts Between Days

As working out was a new years resolution, I didn’t want to just jump right in. Because working out every day would just increase burnout and decrease motivation. So, interleaving is great way to rest so you can be prepared for the next workout! For example, you can workout on Mondays, Thursdays and Sundays but rest on the other days – so you’ve still exercised three times in the week!

Have Other People With You For Motivation

I talked about accountability in my post about Creating New Habits and this is applicable to workouts as well. For anything you do, when you get tired you want to stop – but that’s when your workout is the most efficient. So, having someone with you is really going to help you out. Whether it’s a sports instructor telling you to do something one more time, or someone just telling you to keep going – anything will help increase motivation!

So, I really hope this post was useful for anyone whose resolution was to work out more. Please feel free to share how you’re keeping up with resolutions in the comments!

How You Can Attempt To Balance Your Life This Holiday Season

Hi everyone, Zainab here, welcome or welcome back to the blog. For today’s post, I’m going to be sharing how I attempt (key word: attempt) to balance my life this holiday season! I’m sure many of us can find it stressful sometimes, we have school & work, getting presents for the holidays and our hobbies. So here’s how I attempt to balance my life!

Delegate Responsibilities Between Days And Timings

With many things to do, it’s important to delegate them between days. For example, I set Sundays as my day to write blog posts and thoroughly go through WP Reader. Then, when I have exams to revise for, I delegate subjects between days and even hours. This stops you from having too much of a work overload!

Take Regular Breaks To Relax

Even when delegating responsibilities, you can still get stressed sometimes. So, take regular breaks along with your delegations in order to prevent mass stress, which can just make you perform worse in your responsibilities.

It’s Okay To Ask For Help

When having too much to do, it’s always okay to ask for help. Sometimes, we don’t always ask, which is definitely something even I need to learn. For example, if you don’t have enough time to blog, maybe ask for anyone to guest post!

Thanks so much for reading this post, again I just wanted to stress again this is attempting to balance everything. I don’t balance everything all the time – I’m not perfect. But, we’re all learning together, let me know how you attempt to balance everything!

A Day In My Life – Exam Revision, Blog Post Writing and More!

Hello everyone it’s Zainab here, welcome or welcome back to Zainab Chats! For today’s blog post, I’m going to be doing a day in my life as my day today is quite busy due to exams in upcoming weeks. Let’s jump into it!

8:30am – Eating Breakfast
I’m trying to make sure that I have a balanced diet during exams so that I can take them to the best of my ability – Coco Pops is my usual cereal!

9:00am – Writing Blog Posts
This is honestly such a therapeutic thing to do during exams, and it takes my mind off the stress. Today, I’m writing this post, but I’m not sure for the other so I’ll have to think about that!

10:30am – Revision
Obviously since I have exams tomorrow I have to revise – I usually do revision based on the subjects I have the next day! So, tomorrow I have Biology, Maths and Citizenship so I’m revising them!

2:00pm – Watching The Euros
After having a break, I decided to watch the Euros with my Dad, which is basically the World Cup but for European Teams. It’s England vs Croatia and England won!

5:30pm – Going Through Pinterest
I recently downloaded Pinterest again and I’ve actually enjoyed looking at some Pins. Especially the ones to do with studying as I have exams coming up! I also made some Pins (@zainabchats if you’d like to check them out!)

8:00pm – Watching Netflix
I tend to do this with my family most often, we are currently watching Modern Family and I love it!

9:45 – Bed
During exam season, it’s really important to have a good sleep schedule so I try to go to sleep at a suitable time!

Thank you so much for reading this blog post – do we have any similarities in our day? Let me know in the comments!

My Interview On The Blogger Up Series

Hello everyone it’s Zainab here, welcome or welcome back to Zainab Chats! Today’s blog post is slightly different as I got the lovely opportunity to be interviewed by Nabeeha Jameel from the Brainstorms blog – so today I’ll be sharing my interview with you all! Be sure to check out the original post here and give Nabeeha a follow, now let’s jump into Nabeeha’s interview! from the Blogger Up Series! (Nabeeha’s questions are in bold!)

1. When did you start Zainab Chats, and what inspired you to?

I started Zainab Chats in April 2020. (I started at about the same time too, after being devastated and confused after my O-level Examinations got cancelled) I actually had a previous blog on Blogger called: Z.H Blogs but I really just wanted to rebrand – we were in the middle of lockdown and I couldn’t see us coming out any time soon so I decided to start Zainab Chats to spread positivity to others! (YAY🎊!)

2. I really like the whole aesthetic of your blog. What theme have you used?

Thank you so much! I use the free WordPress theme: Canape

3. Does your blog focus on a specific niche?

I mainly focus on Positivity but I also do other niche-related posts such as Reviews, Study Tips and Lifestyle!

4. Throughout your blogging journey what is one thing that has been a constant challenge?

I’m very thankful my blogging journey hasn’t been much of a challenge. However, one thing that has been a challenge (not specifically about my own blog) but it’s been keeping up with other people’s blogs. Through school and other activities I find it quite difficult to consistently go through WordPress Reader and read other people’s lovely blogs. It’s not a challenge I’ve fully overcome but I’m getting there! (I can relate, but my constant struggle mostly revolves around being consistent with my posts and keeping up with life at the same time😬)

5. I noticed that Zainab Chats has an Instagram account. How has the Instagram account helped with your blogging journey?

The Instagram account really helped me grow my blog in the beginning. Now, I tend to focus less on growth and use the account to interact more with my followers which is not something I can really do in the comments of blog posts.

6. What is your favourite post on Zainab Chats and Why?

That’s such a hard question, but I’d have to say my 100 Followers Special as it was such a big moment for me and I honestly never thought I’d get there. It was also a fun post as I got to react to people’s assumptions about me! (The satisfaction when you reach a 100 followers is indescribable! I cannot wait for your blog to reach 1K!)

7. Where do you see your blog three years from now?

Three years from now, I hope to have grown by blog and to be posting a lot more than twice a week. I don’t like to predict too much as things can change but I hope I’m still blogging and have a lovely community

8. What is the favourite thing you own and why?

I’d have to say my Bullet Journal – it really lets me plan my days so much more efficiently then a regular planner. I’ve actually almost finished it so I’ll be getting a new one soon!

9. Any secret talents that no one knows about?

Honestly, I don’t think so – I’m a pretty open book! (😂 Great!)

10. Imagine you met the Genie, what are the three things you would wish for?

I’d probably wish for: World Peace, A Happy Family and for Others to be happy too!

Be sure to check out Nabeeha’s blog, and other then that, thank you so much for reading! I hope you learned a bit more about me!

Interview With Alexandra Chaves

Hi everyone, it’s Zainab! Welcome or welcome back to Zainab Chats! I am super excited for this post today as it’s been in the works for a long time and I’m so excited to finally be able to share it!

I’ve been privileged enough to interview Alexandra Chaves! You may know her as Piper from the popular TV show: The Next Step! It’s going to be a long post so get comfortable.

We’re talking The Next Step, activism, spreading positivity and more, so let’s jump into it!

1) Thank you so much for agreeing to be interviewed Alex! Just for anybody who doesn’t know you already maybe share a little bit about who you are and what you do!

Hello and thank you for having me, Zainab! I am a nineteen year old actor and dancer, with a passion for performing and storytelling. Readers may know me as ‘Piper’ from the television show, ‘The Next Step’, which airs on CBBC, CBC, Family Channel and other networks around the world. I am grateful for the opportunity the show has given me to explore my passion for acting and dancing. I look forward to continuing to explore my interests in advocacy and girls’ rights, film, health and mindset, which I share on my social media platforms (@alexandrachaves).

2) You’ve talked a lot previously about how your character Piper on The Next Step relates a lot to yourself! Especially in terms of both of you being able to take initiative and standing up for what’s right! How did your interest spark in social justice and activism?

Yes! Piper and I share a lot of similarities and, since I first joined the cast in 2015, I have been inspired by Piper’s initiative and drive to speak out about her passions and her feelings. However, before the role, I already knew that social justice and advocacy were important to me. In elementary school, I was involved in our social justice group, where we held regular meetings to discuss social justice issues and how we could make a difference in our community. My natural progression was to continue to find ways to explore advocacy in my career!

Photo From Her Instagram @alexandrachaves

3) Throughout all of your social media platforms (especially Instagram) you talk a lot about staying positive and happy during these times which isn’t easy. What makes you want to be almost sort of a ‘big sister’ figure for your followers and help with wellbeing and mental health?

Thank you for your kind words! I think it’s important to recognise that with positivity, I am not trying to suppress or invalidate the wide range of emotions we all experience. Instead, I acknowledge my feelings and make efforts to be kind and gentle to myself, especially during these times! ‘Hustle culture’ and the idea of ‘perfectionism’ is so overrated and will leave you feeling burnt out (trust me!). I wish I had more role models when I was younger that helped to give me confidence and make me realise that I don’t have to fit into society’s unrealistic expectations of being ‘perfect’ or living the ideal life. After letting go of this myself, my voice on Instagram has changed, too! For example, I have naturally started sharing quotes, stories and wellness habits that have helped me let go of perfectionism and enjoy the present moment. It is forever a work in progress, but I am grateful for the community I have online and how so many like minded individuals are on this journey with me!

4) Another thing I’ve seen you do during the lockdown is that you’ve become a Youth Ambassador for Plan Canada which helps campaign for equality rights, you’ve done a lot of campaigns such as preventing girls getting bullied on social media, what made you decide to start working with the organisation and do you have any other campaigns with them coming soon?

As a member of my social justice group in elementary school, I was able to learn about issues that are important to me and how to take action. My interest in these issues only grew as I entered high school. However, with my acting career, I had to do online classes for most of my high school years. I missed out on having a community to share my passion for social justice and gender equality. As my Instagram platform grew, I wanted to find and create that community in my online presence. Consequently, I did research to find an organization I could work with that mirrored my values. This led me to contact Plan International Canada, which is a non-profit organization focussing on gender equality and girls’ rights. I am very grateful to be a Youth Ambassador and to help spread the word about important issues facing girls’ and womens’ rights, and to help amplify the important work they are doing to help girls reach their full potential. I regularly attend Plan Canada’s ‘Speaker’s Bureau’ meetings, where like-minded and driven youth meet virtually to discuss barriers facing gender equality. My passion for social justice and activism has just scratched the surface! There is so much more for me to learn and so much work that must be done, but it excites me! I am very grateful for the community I have with Plan Canada and on social media. These voices give me hope for the future and inspire me to pursue activism throughout my career.

5) You’re currently in Canada right now, what is the situation in terms of the pandemic like there? What have you been doing to keep yourself busy as well as productive, I’ve noticed from social media you’ve been doing things like working out!

Where I currently live, we are in a lockdown with stay-at-home orders. It has been difficult, but I am fortunate to be living with my family and I am able to audition and work from home. I haven’t spoken much about this, but I am currently doing some extra school courses like calculus and chemistry, that I did not have time to commit to in the past. I am a lifetime learner and I am really enjoying the structure and knowledge that those classes provide! Virtual acting and dance classes have also been so therapeutic for me. My Mom is my inspiration, and has been motivating me during our at-home workouts, which include Pilates, strength training, yoga and daily walks. The pandemic has really allowed me to really listen to my body, so I am enjoying finding workouts that I enjoy and finding new recipes that fuel me!

6) Now I want to talk a little bit about your acting career. You play Piper on The Next Step, how did you manage to book such a huge role and get into acting?

I have been dancing since I was three years old, so being on stage and performing was second nature! It was only when I was unable to dance due to a heart condition diagnosis, did I find acting as another outlet to explore storytelling and creativity. I had been acting for a few years prior to ‘The Next Step’ and the training and audition experiences helped me when I received an audition from my agent for the show. The audition process included dancing freestyle and choreography, as well as improvised acting. I remember being stunned that I had gotten past the first cut of the audition. There were so many incredibly talented artists in that room! After the final callbacks, I hadn’t heard anything from my agent for a few weeks, so I assumed I did not book the role. However, I later received a vague email saying I would have a few days on set. It was only at the first rehearsal did I learn that I would be on A-Troupe! That was one of the best days of my life! I am so grateful for all that I have learned from The Next Step and its incredible cast and crew.

7) After you booked the role, how did your life change, and for anybody who wants to go into acting, what advice would you give them to prepare for the changes such as rejection, balancing school and more?

After booking ‘The Next Step’ and working on that set, it made me realize that I want to pursue a career in acting and it has given me the experience and confidence to continue to explore my creativity in this industry. The support and comfort from The Next Step crew allowed me to grow as an actor, as well as a person. For anyone who wants to get into acting, I think it’s important to challenge yourself in new ways that help you to grow. For example, deciding to take an acting class that originally intimidated me, ended up being an experience full of growth and inspiration. Often, it is when you go outside of your comfort zone and challenge yourself in new ways, that you grow as a performer and open yourself up to even greater opportunities! I also encourage young artists to explore their creativity, whether that be learning new aspects of the film industry, taking up different hobbies, learning something new, etc. All of those skills and experiences can be so useful as an actor and help us to expand our view of the world!
Regarding rejection, it is something with which I still struggle. However, I have found ways to constructively work through these thoughts. Unfortunately, rejection is a regular part of the industry. However, what I have learned is that staying true to yourself and trusting your unique personality, interpretations and skills is so valuable and will eventually guide you toward the opportunities that are meant for you. I think it is also important to pursue acting for the right reasons. I have fallen in love with the process and I am thoroughly enjoying diving into characters and script analysis. Having become passionate about the craft and its mechanics, I can more easily accept the challenging parts of the career… like rejection.
I grew up balancing my academics with competitive dancing; building time management skills in the process. For those that may be in a similar situation, I encourage you to be diligent with keeping track of your calendar and to-do’s. I practice prioritisation by keeping a colour-coded to-do list to rank the prioritisation of each task. For example, homework, script analysis and preparation for auditions, along with dance training and fitness are the greatest priority. But often, among those, I have to delegate which must be prioritised for the given time I have. On the contrary, I also encourage those balancing school and extracurricular to enjoy the freedom and creativity that dancing, acting, etc provides. Despite my organised schedule, once I am in the dance studio or in front of the camera, it all fades away and I am able to enjoy the present moment. Remember to remind yourself why you started in the first place and why you are doing what you are doing! This helps me stay motivated and in the present moment.

Photo From Her Instagram @alexandrachaves

8) My final question for you is anybody who is struggling emotionally or mentally during these difficult times, what advice could you give to them to ease back into a positive mindset and become a bit more happy?

A habit that has really helped me during these times is to journal nightly. I reflect back on what I did that day, no matter how big or small. I note the little things that made me smile throughout the day, or something I did that made me proud. It is also nice to look back on my entries to realize and appreciate what I have accomplished (even the small things are wins!) and all the moments of happiness I have experienced during this time.

I also am very grateful for my friends, who have made me feel less lonely during these isolated times. Booking regular calls with them creates something to look forward to during the week, and help me stay connected. I encourage those struggling to check in on friends and family. They probably need someone to talk to just as much as you do!
